Meeting Session at KSA - Azizan Rahman

I got a call from Sdra Fathil in the afternoon informing a gathering session at 8.30 pm at Kelab Shah Alam today (25-11-07). Another J-11 to meet is Sdra Azizan Rahman whom I have not met since 1972 after leaving school.

Gathered at KSA was fathil, Shukri dahan, Fakri, Wahab Ikhsan, Isa Sanib and Md. Taib (me).

Azizan is now the big man of REMACO (the repair and maintenance company of TNB). He is the Managing Director. He lives in Sek 9 Shah Alam since 1990 which made me perpelxed since I used to hang in that area but never encounter him. So near, yet so far.

STAR 50 Years Grand Celebration

What a grand celebration on the school turf for 3 days from 26th to 28th October. More than 1,100 alumni returned to their alma matter.

Not many turned up from J-11. Less than 20. Some of the friends whom I met are Fathil Shariff, Fadzil Abdul, Ramli Abdullah, Dr Zakaria Taib, Wahab Ikhsan, Mohamad Bahadon, Razak Bakar, Shahrin Mokhtar, Yusoff Othman, Yusoff Ahmad, Wan Shuib, Dr. Yahya Ahmad, Halim Amri, Rahmat Tambi, Dr Radin & Azizan Yahya.

I was hoping to see many more, but it was not to be. Maybe others have their own commitments.

It was more than 40 years since we set foot in the school. We were young kids then. Today, most of us are not only the father but many are becoming grandfather more and more day by day.

Then not to forget our friends who have gone before us to meet Allah the Creator. Among them are Ismail Lebar, Bongsu Asimi, Nawarwy Hassan, Fauzi Alias, Zahrin...

My good friends Azmi and Nawawi Omar are facing challenging time. To them I offer the doa for recovery.

Time is zooming past us. Only the memories, good or otherwise, will accompany us during this twilight zone of ours.

A Memory in Transition

How many of us have our blood system gushed up at the at the mention of STAR? Or is the memory of STAR is just fading away?

For many of us the memory of STAR evoked the feeling of nostalgia, the feeling of camaraderie, a special fraternity, the belonginess, etc. Maybe to some the "esprit de corps still lingers on.

After all, STAR plays such an imprtant part of our formative years as we traverse this world. A lot of our imprints were developed there during our adolescent years.

We are now entering our golden years. Soon we will be in the twilight of our life on this earth. It just looms over the horizon. It is sobering thoughts. It is no wonder that some of us becoming more philosophical with religious inclined wisdoms.

Some of us have returned to STAR many time, some with less regularity and some none at all.

I was having breakfast with Ali Yusuf at Heritage Hotel during his PPD Conference in June when he quipped, "I have never been back to school after I left in 1972. It still looked the same."

Physically the school has changed even though the panaromic view is not. The dorms have changed. Our two dorms during yesteryear are combined into one. The dining hall has chnegd. The rugby field between black and red houses is dotted with a surau in front of the dining hall.

What has not changed is the spirit of STAR inside us.

Wherever we are now, whatever we are doing now in these twilight years; counting how many kids we have, how many son/daughter in laws we have, how many grandchildren we have, our spirit still not changed. Just wait when we are gathered around. The child in us will come into play. That child that was nurtured at STAR.

So cherish this while we can. Make a trip to STAR while we can. Walk along the corridors or covered paths. Feel the epipheny of the dining hall. Reflect while you zoom your views around the padang and the limestone hillstone which stand majestically behind our alma matter.

Travel back into the time machine while you can. It's not much time left. It's just worth it.

I have been doing it many time. Each time feeling alive!

Beliau lama bertugas sebagai Jurutera MAS diKota Bharu.

Satu insiden yang saya tidak akan lupa ialah bagaimana dia melewatkan penerbangan MAS kerana menyerahkan beg saya yang tertinggal dirumah kawan. sebelum itu dia pastikan saya dapat boarding pass kerana ticket saya tertinggal dalm beg itu. Bila pintu pesawat tertutup untuk terbang, kemudiannya pintu terbuka semula kerana beg saya baru sampai dan dia naikkan serah pada saya. Great Nawi!!.

Dia adalah penasihat dan jurulatih kerohanian kepada Dato' Malik Mydin sewaktu perenang itu melakar kejayaan menyeberangi Selat Inggeris.

Dia dan Malik Mydin pernah kepejabat saya sewaktu sedang mencari "penaja" untuk projek seberang selat tersebut. Saya katakan "PM Mahathir" is the best person. Saya sumbangkan sebuah PC terpakai untuk projek.

Anak gadis beliau yang sedang menuntut diUiTM juga pernah datang pejabat. Mungkin dah kahwin agaknya.

Tahun 1971 dia berpindah ke RMC. Dia meninggal dunia dalam satu kemalangan jalan raya sewaktu hendak pergi perkhemahan diRMC tahun yang sama.

Saya menjadi rapat dengan datuknya, Tuan Hj. Mohd Said YDP Majlis Agama Perlis.Datuknya pernah bawa saya masuk gua di Wang Klian.

Azmi adalah seorang ahli sukan. Pemain Bolatampar sekolah pasukan junior dan Senior. Bermain rugby U-16 dan pasukan olahraga melontar peluru.

Satu kisah menarik ialah bagaimana Azmi menjadi penulis secara tiba-tiba. Menjadi johan pertandingan drapen (drama pendek) STAR semasa ditingkatan empat. Saya menulis drapen tersebut tetapi tidak jadi hantar. Azmi minta drapen itu. Hantar atas namanya dengan persetujuan saya. Bila keputusan diumumkan dia menang.

Kebelakangan ini Azmi kurang sihat. Awal tahun ini dia menjalani pembedahan "colon". Kemudian chemoterapi.

Our life is whatever meaning we give to it. It is up to us, personally and individually, to give our life its meaning - whatever it is. It can be rich or poor, smart or dumb, fulfilling or empty, success or failure, rewarding or emptiness, beautiful or ugly, fast or slow, joy or miserable, interesting or boring, etc, etc.. or rather .... whatever!!

Interesting about lifem isn't it? It made me ponder, whatever it is !!

First Journey to STAR

The first person that I met on my way to STAR to report to the school in early January 1967 was Allahyarham Nawawi (fondly remembered as Pak Wi).

We were both escorted by our fathers. He boarded the train at Gurun and I boarded at Bedong. (Bedong station was closed years already and grown with thick bushes). The train wan an old old coal fired locomotive and you could very well tell it from the look of your short when you disembark.

Pak Wi was my first friend to STAR. He hailed from Padang Lumat. While our fathers were deeply engrossed in their discusiion we spent the time together.

It was the most fantastic journey of my life. A journey into the unknown to start a new life. A journey that woven a new fabric of my life as to so many my other friends.

And like what my favourite mentor Anthony Robbins said "The future does not equal the past".

Hassan Hamat from Kelantan, Red house and form remove B 1967. I heard that he is somewhere in Kesedar area.

The other long long friend that I cherish to meet is Ali Edar. My blue house dormmate and a Batu Pahat boy. The last I sam him was in 1975 in UPM, that's 32 years ago.

The "Stubborn" Little "President"

At Dr Termizi's daughter's wedding Hassan Samad could not help re-collecting the thought on our J-11 President, Sdra Fathil Shariff, at the prodding of Dr. Hafiz.

Hassan Samad was the remove B class monitor. Fathil was the smallest guy in the class. But he was aslo the toughest (another word for "degil" as described by Hassan) and eraned his nickname as the "orang besi".

One day the Fathil the "ironman" did not ascribe to Hassan the monitor's instruction. It nearly erupted into a fight.

Luckily a number of the classmates went to the rescue. It will not be an even fight, even though the iron man stood his ground in pure fighting spirit.

Well that was 4o years ago in 1967 - the blue house remove B class. And the form teacher was Mr. Kamaruddin.

Between Rugby and 4x400 relay team

I met Dr. Hafiz on 11th. August 2007 at Kelab Shah Alam during Prof Dr Termizi's daughter's wedding.

We were reminiscing about the yesteryears nostalgias 37 years ago. About rugby and 4x400 relay U-16 teams.

For rugby he played the forward position as the right prop and I was the left prop. Nawawi Che Omar was the hooker. The team went on to thrash Malay College 28-3 at Ipoh Padang in 1970 to become Perak champion.

As for 4x400 relay team the members were the late Nawawi (Pak Wi) and, Md Taib (me), Dr Hafiz, and the Fauzi Alias. We Were the Ipoh and central Perak Champions.

"You know Doc only the 2nd and 3rd. runners are left behind now....." I whispered to Dr. Hafiz.

The time whizzed pass all of us.

I received the news with a lump in the throat.

First Azmi is hospitalised in Alor Star and underwent surgery to remove the colon infected with cancer. When I phone him it was 3 days after the surgery. He is recovery. His voice sounded full of fighting spirit.He still goes for chemo.

The last I spoke to him he was waiting to biard a bus to Kangar from Shah Alam after visiting her daughter in Medan. His daugher is doing medic at Universit Sumatera Utara.

To him we wish well and speedy recover.

Then the news about Nawawi Che Omar who had a stroked attack and had paralysis on some parts of the body.Information is that he is recovering but still could not speak. Kamal Jamaluddin and Zainal (Bodger) had visited him

Majlis Pertemuan J11

Minggu ini adalah minggu pertemuan rakan-rakan lama. Kesempatan pertama semasa Majlis Makan Malam Perdana 3 Serangai (STAR, SDAR, STF) pada 9hb Ogos 2007 di Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC). Majlis gilang gemilang sambutan bersama penubuhan 50 tahun sekolah menengah Melayu pertama.

Antara rakan-rakan J-11 yang hadir ialah Mohamad Bahadon, Abd. Rahman Othman, Ruzlan Zabidi, Rahmat Tambi, Zainal Yahya, Kamal Jamaluddin, Fauzi Mansor, Yusof Ahmad, Shukri Dahan, Dr. Zakaria, SM Nordin, Razak Bakar, Shahrin Mokhtar, Dato Nasir Ahmad, Darif Idris, Hassan Samad, Wahab Ikhsan, Dr. Ahmad Tajuddin Othman, Fathil Shariff, dll ( maaf kerana tak dapat ingat…)

Terima kasih pada Dato Rosli Sharif yangg sponsor meja-meja J-11 dan kesian kerana tidak dapat bersama kerana ada halangan lain, dan terima kasih pada sdra Presiden J-11 yang tidak jemu-jemu jemput kawan-kawan untuk hadir.

Pertemuan kedua ialah pada Majlis Perkahwinan anak Professor Dr Ahmad termizi Ramli ((Ustaz) – dia ke RMC tingkatan 4) di Kelab Shah Alam pada 11 hb Ogos 2007. Antara J-11 yang hadir ialah Dr. Hafiz Ali, Hassan Samad, Shukri, dll. Kesian pada Dr Hafiz yang tidak ingat pada Hassan Samad satu rumah kuning dengan beliau. Banyak benda yang dia lupa lepas impak kemalangan. Dan Jun laau beliau mengalami serangan jantung. Begitulah apa yang antara kita akan lalui umur-umur begini.

Teringat saya pada Nawawi dan Azmi. Semuga kembali sembuh dan sihat walafiat.
